Our Life in Northern Michigan

A Little Catching Up To Do

So. We did a thing. A big thing. A grown up thing. We bought a house! And not only a house but a “fixer upper.” Yep. Just call us Chip and Jo! But let’s back up a little…

This past February, my husband Paul and I welcomed our beautiful baby girl Kinley.  We were living in Grand Rapids, MI at the time but as soon as she was born, we knew we wanted to return to the place where we’d both grown up. My parents, Paul’s parents, and many other close family members were all here, and it became very obvious that we wanted Kinley to be around them as much as possible. Plus, who wouldn’t want to live in “Charlevoix the Beautiful?” Before Kinley was born, we had considered moving back but it hadn’t worked out due to lack of employment opportunities for Paul. However, shortly after she was born, an opportunity did arise for Paul to start a business of his own. Things just took off from there. The story about the business is for another post but let’s just say that God has definitely had His hand in our life lately.
Fast-forward a few months and things just kept falling into place one after the other. Next thing we know, we own a 3 bedroom, 2 bath ranch-style home on Susan Lake in Charlevoix! And get this… It’s located on the same street as the home where Paul grew up, in which his parent’s still live! Speaking of his parents, they have been gracious enough to let us stay with them while we tackle this big project we’ve taken on. We owe them many, many thanks!
In all of this, the thought of starting a blog has crossed my mind but with everything going on it has been pushed to the back burner. But here I am! We are already pretty far along in the renovation project but there’s still much more to be done. So, I figured better late than never! I know that one day I’ll be happy I documented this. With that, here are photos of the home before we started any work on it. Stay tuned! In the next post I’ll share progress photos and info about the work we’ve done so far.
Keep reading to view photos and pre-demolition house details!

Welcome home! This is the view from the front door.
As we enter on the left we have the mudroom/laundry.

As you can see, it’s going to take a bit of work to get our “ducks in a row.”
Next, we have the guest bathroom.
Across the hall is the first room which we plan to use as an office/guest space.

Five lovely words: shag carpet, wallpaper, popcorn ceiling.

This is the second bedroom, Kinley’s room. This window faces the lake!
Mooore wallpaper! (And popcorn ceiling. And carpet.)

Next, we walk into the kitchen.

Lots of potential in this room. What? You don’t see it? Just wait!

Oh, and carpet in the kitchen too, of course!

The kitchen is actually my favorite room. I can’t wait to show the transformation!

The kitchen then opens up into the living room and features this beautiful stone fireplace.

It also features some beautiful wood paneling!

Big glass windows facing the lake. And Kinley with Auntie Kiersten, taking it all in.
The master bedroom also faces the lakeside.
His and hers closets and master bathroom.

Did you noticed that there is MORE wallpaper? Also, carpet in the bathroom! So trendy!

I’m actually so excited for this tub!!

This room is truly the cherry on top: the sun-room off of the living room.

The room is unfinished but we have plans to finish it and make it a very usable space.

We have our work cut out for us, but it’s going to be so worth it in the end!
